Junior mechanical engineering major Adrian Perez of Rockford, IL; chemistry major Caitlyn Klein of Flanagan, IL; freshman biology, chemistry and psychology major O’Linda Phillips-Lawrence of Kankakee, IL; senior nutrition and dietetics major Diana Garcia of Cicero, IL., stand by one of the popular labs found during STEMfest. As Huskie Service Scholars, STEMfest is one of their biggest activities. Their presentation during Undergraduate Research and Artistry Day showed which NIU Exploration Labs exhibits were big hits among the kids. While working on the project, Phillips-Lawrence enjoyed seeing how the kids interacted. “They actually learn,” Phillips-Lawrence said. “And they gave us feedback. It’s fun to see it making an impact.” Perez agreed that the honesty of the children was merited. “They would tell us what works and what doesn’t. “And some of the elementary students had no problems correcting them. “I go in to explain a lab and sometimes they reminded me of things that I should be explaining, “Perez said, “I actually would be learning from them.” All of the participants in the project came away with a common result; self-validation in picking the right major of study for them. In addition, Phillips-Lawrence learned that she liked to work with children and now wants to change her minor so she can further work with STEM. “I realized I love my career. I knew what I wanted to do but now I’m really happy with it. STEM fields are really fun and kids need to know this.”
