FINAL: With a passion for social activism and as a contract major in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, Romeo Jackson put his emphasis of study on intersectionality and social justice, a major he created, which looked at the overlapping of social identities with systems of oppression or discrimination and how these systems are effected or effect, the social justice system. His major is only an extension of Jackson’s accomplishments and work on the NIU campus. He earned the 2016 Deacon Davis Diversity Award presented by the Presidential Commission on the Status of Minorities to those who make “significant contributions to the improvement of the status of minorities on campus.” Jackson has worked to increase the recruitment of speakers and speaking engagements of minorities and members of the LGBT community and being an advocate for victims and survivors of sexual assault and other violence. He serves as director of Cultural Affairs for NIU’s Student Association and on the Campus Pride Board of Directors. He is a fellow with Campus Pride, the Arcus Foundation and Young People. He interned with NIU’s Community Standards and Student Conduct, the National Center for Transgender Equality, the Office of Congresswoman Gwen Moore in Washington, DC, and NIU’s Career Services. He serves on the National Advisory Council for the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education and was named one of the 100 Black and LGBT-SGL leaders to watch.
