FINAL: Alfredo Cervantes of Blue Island, IL, an athletic training major, was a little surprised when he was approached with the suggestion that he enroll in the Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) and conduct his research on immigration. But it didn’t stop him.
“I’m the kind of person that likes taking on challenges,” Cervantes said. He said doing the research on this topic has introduced him to a lot of new information. “And honestly, it’s been mind-blowing.” It was a rough start at first, as Cervantes knew very little about the subject. “The first two weeks were conflicting for me because I didn’t know what anyone was talking about.” But as he went along and gathered more information, Cervantes reached a solid understanding of the issues surrounding immigration, including an important moment in immigration history: the Immigrant Rights March that took place in 2006. After learning about the march and speaking to one of the organizers, Cervantes wished he could have been a part of it. “I was 10-years-old. Now looking at this, I wish I could go back.”
