Final - Photo by Michelle LaVigne/Creative Services Left to right, junior sociology and philosophy major Sean Myatt of McHenry, IL, and junior family social services major Rodolfo Rosiles of Waukegan, IL, worked together on a project they call “Digital Impressions of Blackness,” which compared the different outcomes based on race from two real-life crimes. The topic had started as a smaller classroom project where sociology instructor Dr. Mary Landeros encouraged both students to extend the subject into a research project and present it during Undergraduate Research and Artistry day. Myatt, who already had great interest in research, said it was Dr. Landeros who “put us on the fast track.” However Rosiles hadn’t even given the idea of doing research much thought. “Honestly, I didn’t think about doing this and now I have more confidence with it,” Rosiles said. “No one told me it was something I could do. I had this mindset that it was what ‘other people’ do.” But now Rosiles feels he wants to extend their project and answer more questions on the topic. The world of research has ceased to feel impossible or uninteresting.
