FINAL: Political science major Nathan Lupstein has served as the elected student body president for the past year, president of Sigma Nu, president of the pre-law honor society and he is president and founder of Men Against Misogyny on Campus (MAMOC,) which he started due to his exposure to “troubling attitudes towards women on campus,” as a freshman. He created the group to provide education to students on this topic. He was elected vice president of programming for the campus activities board and as a Northern Lights Ambassador. Through the student association, Lupstein started the No Shame Campaign, with the goal of eliminating the stigma of shame for seeking help and encouragement for people to share stories regarding mental health. While making these achievements, Lupstein maintained a 4.0 grade point average for his entire time at NIU. Lupstein also writes free-form, short poetry on the subject of oppression. “When I understand some form of oppression, I like to write from that viewpoint,” Lupstein said. “I want it to evoke an emotion and be something people think about.”
Lupstein sees art as a way to form better bonds of cultural understanding between people and he views fashion as an art form that assists in this as well. “Fashion is one of the most profound arts, because, in life, everyone has a chance to express themselves by what they put on in the morning,” Lupstein said. He believes art is a way of bringing people together. “It’s important to understand the intent behind the creation. This is a universal experience and when we all endure the same experience it can bring us together. People empathize with one another through that medium. Art is an effective way to do that.” Lupstein has secured a job in the fashion industry following graduation.
