FINAL: Senior psychology major and orientation leader Keeayla Jones of Chicago, IL, was pushed to always pursue higher education from her mother, always letting Keeayla chose her path, but suggesting routes to take in her life. Jones said her father was a bit more difficult to convince at first when she chose to obtain a college degree over a going into the military. But that opinion quickly changed once he saw the impressive grades that Jones was achieving at NIU. “He was like, ‘your good,’ after seeing that, ‘you got this.’” Her connection to her family and community are the reasons Jones was interested in having an education in psychology. She hopes through her own education, she can then help educate her own family and friends. She sees a need in the local community of Englewood for after-school programs and for continued help with education. Her goal is to set up a private practice in the community where she can help students with not only math and science skills, but also life skills; such as opening a bank account, buying a car. “I really feel that if you give people education then you can help them to become better people.”
