FINAL: Freshman elementary education major Mikala Ellis of Rockford, IL, thought coming to college would require a lot more work from her. “And that’s true,” Ellis said. She’s found her coursework to be more demanding than she was used to in high school. “It’s different. I’ve had to adjust a lot.” Ellis is currently commuting home because she wasn’t comfortable with the idea of spending the nights away from home. “I’m very close with my family. I spent the night at orientation and just that one night missed my family.” But she’s seeing the option of moving on to campus being a possibility for next year. In the meantime, she’s enjoying her major. “I want to teach. I don’t know exactly what grade yet but definitely the younger kids. They’re the cutest.”
